Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is a method to generate pictures from inner parts of the body. It works with a strong magnetic field and radio waves; it manages without Roentgen radiation as being used computer tomography. With this technique soft tissues can nicely be visualized, that means even parts of the body that do not consist of bones, such as the human brain. Trough functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) even functional processes within the body can be measured and visualized, for instance the change of blood streaming in particular brain regions corresponding to activation.

MRI does not have any biological risk for patients or volunteers. But for the visualization of task-specific brain activation it is very loud and therefore disturbing. An efficient noise cancelling is necessary, also a possibility to transfer acoustic stimuli to the patient inside the scanner. But since the scanner works with an extremely strong magnetic field, conventional electronic equipment would not only influence the measurement causing artefacts, but would also represent considerable danger for patients and personnel. Ferromagnetic objects would speed up in the direction of the source of the magnetic field or heat up themselves causing burns.

These are the reasons why a technology for the use in and around MRI-scanners must be based on a different principle. The products of the MR confon GmbH comprise communication and anti-noise solutions developed especially fort he use in MRI. Our systems are perfectly suited for set up radiologists – for being inexpensive, robust, easy to handle and not very time consuming – and also for complex functional measurements in hospitals or science – through a variety of connections computer control. All products are compatible with each other and can be upgraded to multi-level noise cancelling systems.

Our audio presentation systems increase safety and comfort of the patients. Through extraordinary passive deadening the systems contribute to massive reduction of noise strain and through this lower the risk of hearing defects – even at loudest sequences. Soothing the patients with music and providing better communication as can be approved reduces cancellation of examinations because of fear. An increased patient comfort and lower quotas of cancellation lead to fast amortisation.

Additionally, we provide electro-dynamic head phones, especially developed for the use in MRI. With the internal CD-player of the audio control unit and via the operator microphone music und language can be presented in high quality. Further, the control unit provides various possibilities to connect peripheral equipment (such as MP3-player, stimulus computer etc.). The function of our head phones PELTOR and SILENTA is based on an electro- dynamic principle. After applying a signal voltage the magnetic field of the scanner drives the magnet-free headphone membrane.

Our BILSOM head phones are being driven piezo-electrically. BISLOM covers the gap between the internal head phones (PELTOR and SILENTA that can be used within the active area of the gradient field) and common head phones (that should not be used in rooms of actively shielded scanners). This way, accompanying persons can be integrated in the measurement and participate in what is going on.

This technological progress is currently secured by several patents and is based on intensive and longstanding research, accompanied by scientific publications.

The technique is tested, CE-certified and serves highest standards of German medicine products.
